I feel like the reason certain dog-lovers insist cats are evil is because they read their body language as if they were dogs. So here’s a very basic guide to common “mean” things cats do that actually aren’t mean at all if you know what they’re thinking.

Rolling and exposing belly- attacks you when touched
Does not mean: Give belly rubs! - haha I tricked you!
Actually means: I’m playful! If you reach for my belly I’ll grab your arm and bite it because I think we’re playfighting!

Lazily exposing belly - still attacks when touched
Does not mean: tricked you again!
Actually means: I’m showing you my belly because I trust you. Please don’t break that trust by invading my personal space. I might accept a belly rub if I’m not ticklish and I know you well.

Snapping at you while being pet
Does not mean: I suddenly decided I dislike you!
Actually means: You’re petting me in a way that gives me too much restless energy. Please focus on petting my head and shoulders instead of stroking the full length of my back next time.

Is in the same room but makes no attempt to interact
Does not mean:  I’m ignoring you
Actually means: We’re hanging out! I’m being respectful by giving you space while still enjoying your company.

Slapping/scratching your hand when you try to pet them
Does not mean: I hate you!
Actually means: You’ve failed to establish that we’re not playing, or the way you’re approaching me scares me. Be calmer, speak more gently, make eye-contact and blink slowly at me before you try again.

I love this post omg, thank you so much. As a lifelong cat person, dogs perplex me because they’re so completely different behaviourally.

I love dogs too but, I’ve been trying to tell people, you canNOT treat cats like you treat dogs. They arent the same animals and have very different personalities

P.s.: people often pet cats way too hard. Dogs like a firm pet or a pat on the belly, cats dont have the same bone structure and are more flexible than dogs so what you’re doing probably hurts them

Sitting and staring
Does not mean: I am challenging you/plotting your demise/just generally evil and creepy.
Actually means: I am a desert-adapted species, so my natural tears are very thick and keep my eyes moist for a nice long time. I do find people interesting and enjoy watching them.  I just don’t need to blink very often!

Staring and blinking slowly
Does not mean: I’m smug and think I am smarter than you.
Actually means: I like you! But I don’t need to get up in your face to show it.  I can just sit over here and blow kisses at you to show you I am glad you are around!

It’s very frustrating for me when people expect cats to act like dogs, or act like they’re deceitful.  They aren’t!  They just AREN’T DOGS.

#CROW NO

Crow: CROW YES!

It’s actually impossible to measure how many fucks a corvid give because there is no device sensitive enough to register such a tiny amount.

science/animal side of tumblr… explain to me the birb thing

Tail Pulling is a behavior noted in many corvids. The practical application is to create a distraction that will allow the birb to make off with the target’s food. Imagine being in the lunch room and a large fellow has a Twinkie you covet. You can’t just take it from him because he’ll defend his Twinkie. But if you thwap him on the back of his neck and then dash around to snag the Twinkie while he investigates, you stand a decent chance of enjoying spongey goodness. This is basically that in birb form.

Except corvids don’t only do this as a distraction. Sometimes they seem to just being doing it to mess with other animals/birbs. But to use my lunch room analogy, there are times you might thwap someone sneakily on the back of the neck just for amusement. Primates exhibit behavior that appears to be just be annoying other animals for amusement. Given how intelligent crows are, its not unlikely that this is a manifestation of an innate desire to just fuck with someone else for the fun of it. Such as this from the link above:

THANK YOU FOR THE BIRB KNOWLEDGE

BECAUSE IT IS FUN

This speaks to me on a molecular level.

birbs just wanna have fun

Sorry to hijack a little, but to put it bluntly, corvids are also pretty BALSY. They are more than prepared to harass other huge birds of prey which could deal them a lot of damage. There’s plenty of cases of corvids ‘riding’ other birds as well. It’s often to harass the larger bird out of the area, but as @red3blog said, they quite often (in layman’s terms) enjoy fucking shit up for fun.

‘Where the hell is the seatbelt on this thing?’

I mean they deserve a medal for having such huge bird balls imo

Literally no fucks are given by corvids. Ever.

@neurodivergent-crow

I haven’t seen this post in ages but it’s my fave corvid post.

Intelligence is rooted in how much of a dick you can knowingly be.

Stop trying to justify the actions of your bad animal friends with “intelligence” and “gamee culture”. They’re mean and no longer invited to my house parties.

Victor’s Short Program score

sasimehyuga:

Yuri Plistesky breaking Victor’s SP score had me wondering. Around how high was Victor’s SP score?! Well, turns out, they showed a us his score, AND Yuuri’s way back at episode 4. Although it’s may or may not be the world record set up by Victor, it’s at least a good estimation around how high Victor Nikiforov’s SP scores were. To add to that, they even showed us their program elements for the previous season’s SP. Screenshots under the cut.

p sure someone already wrote 100+ pages on this but oh wELL HERE I GO

The fact Victor has a poodle melts my heart. My son is a standard poodle as well, so I consider myself Qualified™ to say this is the best breed for him.

Poodles are widely known as companion dogs. They’re extremely affectionate puppers who’ll cuddle you on every available opportunity and be delighted to sleep in your arms to console you after being rejected by bae.

image
image

Poodles are perfect for lonely people. Folks that live by themselves often don’t get touched enough *cough* or are even touch-starved which we all know is Victor’s case *cough*, and poodles are so tactile they’d love to just chill on the couch with you for hours.

image

Poodles are also very intelligent and sensitive - they have a way of reading you, almost like an emotional tether. I can’t count how many times I felt horrible and had my fluff ball jump on my lap and lick my face unsolicited, even when I wasn’t crying outward. They understand you and are there for you when nobody else is.

image

While all of this is heartwarming, it’s also where the pain comes. Poodles are prone to experiencing separation anxiety. Mine’s was pretty terrible in his pup days. He’s almost eight years old now, but he still gets distressed whenever I start packing for a trip. (The last time was about a month ago, and uh, it escalated.)

The reason I’m saying this is because I think it’s safe to assume Victor’s been away from home for most of the time he’s owned Maccachin now, but that doesn’t mean Macca is unaffected or even used to it:

image
image

Maccachin obviously isn’t the only one who cherishes their time together. Here are some words from Kubo:

Since Maccachin is pretty old, Victor has the premonition that his last season as a competitive skater might overlap with the last year of Maccachin’s life. It’s quite possible that he prioritized spending those last few months to a year with Maccachin over his own skating career. (x)

Also, this is so important to me:

image

While reflecting about the good things going to Hasetsu brought to his life in the past eight months, being able to spend more time with Macca is the first thing Victor mentions.

Just. I am forever In Crisis™ over how much Victor loves his doge and his doge loves him. Theirs is hands down my second favorite love story in this show.

TL;DR I would DIE for them

Yuuri didn’t actually mess up at the Sochi GPF theory

livixbobbiex:

Okay so I was rewatching episode one when I noticed something from the news articles about the Free Skate failure:

image

The word “today” really did stick out at me here. As you know, both programmes would not be on the same day, so with the way this article is phrased, it sounds like he at least did okay during his Short. And then this comes directly afterwards:

image

I’m not sure about the original Japanese, but the use of “fell” here suggests a dramatic turn around. To fall, you must be at some height. And for them to make an article on it? No, Yuuri must have not been already in last place. We know Viktor must have been in first place, but Yuuri? I think he was fourth MINIMUM based on this. He even says in some internal monologue:

image

His ‘big day’? Why would it be a big day if he’d already done disastrously a day or two before in his Short? Surely, a ‘ big day’ would symbolise him possibly winning a medal?

image

If he was in last place already, he wouldn’t HAVE that kind of pressure. But all of these lines highly suggests to me that he at least had a shot at doing well during the GPF, maybe he was even close enough that he could have had a chance for a silver medal.

image

We find out during episode five that during the GPF, Yuuri can’t have scored above 94.36, as they announce it to be his personal best. Still, there’s no reason he couldn’t have scored around 90 ish, which when looking at the other scores that year, probably would have put him in a good position

image

I did the maths as yes, if you plug his Short score at around 90 it gives a realistic Free score considering he pretty much messed up all of the technical points.

Yuuri Katsuki was most likely in line for bronze or silver after his Short

What does this mean?

image

This little interaction of Viktor not recognising him as a skater is so much worse, as is Yuuri’s FS failure overall

tl;dr Yuuri actually did very well in his short last time

We do actually know how much his short program from the previous GPF scored from the protocol paper in chapter 4. It’s 82.80. (in chapter 5 it’s also had been said that Eros beated his previous PB almost 10 points so ~84 pts.) So his FS scored 149.79. Considering that at the time he only had 4T in his arsenal, he might messed up both his 4T and 4T combination which were his only hope.

Also scrubbed through the five times Yuuri’s skated his Short Program to get an idea of what the full thing looks like!

This one was more complete, and way easier to make, than his Free Program was.

Also, watch me make him magically land his quad flip ✌️

I do not own any content in this video.

xiaodreamer asked: What does the skaters do with all the gifts that fans threw onto the rink?

lazuliblade:

@xiaodreamer I’m making this a “On Gifts” post because I’ve been meaning to do one for a while… I hope you don’t mind…

In general, they’ll keep the ones they really like, and donate the rest to charities or hospitals.

Well-loved skaters receive truckloads of plushies over the years. In some videos behind-the-scenes, you’ll see the stadium hallways lined with bags full of the Pooh plushies that were thrown for Yuzuru. I know Yuzu once stated that even with donating so many Poohs, he’s kept enough throughout his career to where he has a room full of Pooh to greet him when he returns home. Plushenko apparently once ordered some containers to ship back to Russia every one of the gifts given to him by fans in Japan. IIRC, it was some ridiculous weight like 500 kg. I believe he donated the majority of that to charities in his city.

image

^You can see how the gifts cover the ice here for Yuzuru. The ice is being continuously cleared while more stuff rains down. There are a bunch of flower girls and flower boys that are invited to help clear the ice for these competitions. With really popular skaters, commentators sometimes joke that the next skater will need to weave among the gifts as they get ready for their turn.

image

^Personalized gifts tend to be kept by skaters: bears with the current costume sewn on them, figurines, music boxes, phone covers, water bottle covers, etc. Here you can see Misha with a Stitch plushy that was given to him by a fan who approached the boards – in the same way that Minako personally gave Chris his flower crown. Like Yuzu with Pooh, and Javier with Mickey, Misha has Stitch as his mascot character. Fans research (by stalking Instagram/Twitter/news) what their favorite skaters like, and buy or make gifts accordingly. The special gifts tend to be given at the boards or handed directly to staff instead of thrown on the ice. Some gifts are very creative:

image

And sometimes skaters get bizarre gifts… like that one time Patrick Chan received panties…. or when Plushenko would have bras thrown at him…. I’m sure Victor and Chris have received gifts like these from rabid fans. I’m not sure what skaters do with those kinds of gifts, but if it’s a T-shirt or something, you might see them wear it and post a picture.

image

So the reason Yuuri gets food and dog plushies, and Yurio gets cat plushies, is because fans read on their respective profiles or heard in interviews that Yuuri loves food and owns(owned) a dog, and Yurio loves cats (owns one&wears cat-patterned clothing). Since Christophe also takes pictures of his cat and posts them on Instagram, I bet fans mail cat toys to him.

image
image

^Flowers, likewise are kept or donated. They’re tied with plastic so that the flower is marginally protected when thrown on the ice and so that you don’t have flower petals littering the place. Some years ago I briefly worked in the floral industry, and I know that flowers and floral arrangements at these kinds of events tend to be donated to local hospitals.

I hope no one thinks that the skaters are ungrateful for giving away the gifts that are given to them - it’s just that it’s way too much for one person to keep!
